Course description
This class was designed to improve reading skills on an individual basis. The class will implement teacher-directed instruction, individual work, group work and paired work. The students will be working on several strategies including but not limited to comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, evaluating and responding to various texts. This year I will work hard to improve each student’s level however the students will need to work at home by practicing reading nightly.

Classroom rules:
Remain seated at all times unless you have permission to be out of your seat.
Raise your hand
Follow instructions of the teacher
Treat others with respect
Students are not allowed to be behind teachers desk or cabinets unless you have permission
Bring needed supplies each day

Tardy policy: Sulphur Middle School tardy policy applies. First tardy is a warning. Second tardythe student will receive sentences. After the third tardy students will be required to serve in lunch detention.

Grading: Students will receive a minimum of 2 grades per week. The grades will not be weighted. Grades for missed assignments due to absences will be the student’s responsibility to get assignments missed and turned in to the teacher.  The student will be given 2 days for each absence. I will accept late work however there will be a deduction of 10 points per day for each day late.

Grade reports: Grades may be viewed at any time through the district website.  Therefore, weekly reports, other than the school-wide progress reports will not be sent home.
Homework: The students will be required to read at home 3 nights per week for 20 minutes each of the 3 nights. I will send home a reading log which will need to be filled out and signed by the parent each night. This is to be returned on Friday for a grade. The log requires the student to summarize what they have read using complete sentences. The minimum amount to be written on the summary daily is 3 complete sentences. I will not accept the logs without parent signature and a summary written for each night. Your child will have an accelerated reading goal each 9 weeks. This will count as 2 grades for a total of 200 points each 9 weeks.
